When I was growing up one of my favorite games was to determine who was the tallest.
My younger sisters and I would compete by standing against the door frame and marking our height to determine how much we had grown.
My sisters would stand on their tiptoes to try being taller than me. As the oldest, I was always the tallest!
Children assume they will grow taller. We believe our growth is automatic. However, as a leader, we know growth does not just happen.
As a leader, we focus on helping others, but what about our personal growth? What are you doing to grow yourself as a leader?
How do you get better at what you do? Growth is not automatic! We must be intentional to expand our knowledge and increase our skill set.
So how can you grow as a leader? Start by pursuing personal growth. To lead others, lead yourself well first.
John C. Maxwell identifies practical principles, which can be applied in developing one’s personal growth in his book “The 15 Invaluable Laws of Growth.”
Maxwell makes the case that personal growth is the only vehicle by which individuals arrive at their full potential. Success does not just happen, nor is it luck.
John states to get where you want to go in life, personal development cannot be overlooked, postponed, or taken for granted. Drawing from his own journey of self-development, he shares proven principles for upgrading your capacities to lead others and generate results.
As Maxwell consistently makes plain, growth does not happen automatically. He articulates truths you can apply immediately to make the most of your time, talents, and influence.
Jim Rohn said, “You cannot change your destination overnight, but you can change your direction overnight.” The formula for success is simple, but it requires preparation and action.
Now, I know what you are thinking — most successful people are lucky. They were in the right place, they know the right people, or they were born with resources.
So how can I achieve success? What is the formula, Kim? Here is Maxwell’s formula for luck:
Preparation (growth) + Attitude + Opportunity + Action (doing something about it) = Luck
We create our own luck! Success is the result of the choices we make. So what is the formula for success? Follow Maxwell’s formula for luck but replace preparation with growth and luck with success.
Growth + Attitude + Opportunity + Action = Success
Why should you start today? Growth is a choice. If you want to maximize your potential and achieve success, you must be intentional in your choices.
Like compounding interest, growth compounds and accelerates when you commit to a personal growth plan.
The sooner you start, the bigger the payoff! START today!
