During a recent retirement celebration, I had the privilege of honoring a Pinnacle leader.

Over the course of her more than 50-year career, she has improved the lives of children through education, and developed leaders throughout her organization.

During the ceremony, speaker after speaker spoke about her leadership style. One of the most special qualities this leader possesses is her ability to speak with authority outside her area of expertise. Her influence is extensive and her reputation is legendary.

What makes this leader exceptional is her ability to make everyone around her better. “The individuals who reach Level 5 lead so well for so long that they create a legacy of leadership in the organization they serve” (Maxwell). While we will miss the day-to-day interaction, her legacy will continue to shape our organization.

Most people will never have the opportunity to work with or for a pinnacle leader. Why? Pinnacle leaders are rare!

According to Maxwell, Pinnacle leaders stand out from others. They lift the entire organization and create an environment that benefits everyone.

So what makes someone a pinnacle leader? In his book The 5 Levels of Leadership, Maxwell provides five stages of leadership growth.

The five levels of leadership are:

  1. Position: People will follow you because they have to
  2. Permission: People follow you because they want to
  3. Production: People follow because of what you have done for the organization
  4. People Development: People follow because of what you have done for them
  5. Pinnacle: People follow because of who you are and what you represent

Now I know what you are thinking. How can I become a Pinnacle leader? Before you can entertain the thought of becoming a Pinnacle leader, you must continue to grow as a leader and move up from Level 1: Positional leader to Level 4: People Developer.

Once you reach level 4-people developer, then you are ready to embrace three beliefs leaders must have if they want to become a Pinnacle leader.

  • It is more important to develop leaders than it is to have followers.
  • Establishing a leadership culture is vital element in developing people
  • Developing leaders is a lifelong commitment

Pinnacle leader’s influence extended beyond their reach and their time. According to Maxwell, “leadership is a process, not a position.”
