One of the biggest challenges you’ll face working remotely is limiting distractions and using your time effectively. Overcoming this challenge increases your productivity, one of the hallmarks of remote work.

There are many, many, many time management tips available from lots of experts. Here are five techniques I’ve used to be more effective when working remotely:

  1. Establish a Schedule
  2. Take Regular Breaks
  3. Plan Tasks for Time Blocks
  4. Don’t Multitask!
  5. Leverage Technology

Now, I’m sure you’ve heard some of these tips before, if fact none of them may be new to you. I’ll briefly dive into each one, and hopefully, you’ll pick up a thing or two.

One of the biggest draws of remote work is that you no longer have to work on a 9-5 schedule. However, this can also be one of the most significant pitfalls of working remotely.

If you don’t have a schedule, it’s easy to lose track of time, spend your time ineffectively, or work far longer than you should. Making a schedule for your workday puts you in control of your time. You can decide what tasks to perform when and for how long. Create a plan that works for you, and stick to it.

In addition to your work schedule, you should take breaks. You’ll be more productive if you take regular breaks throughout the day, including a break for lunch.

You can create blocks of time to work on projects and schedule them between your meetings and other scheduled events. You’ll also end up with some fragments of time, 10 minutes here, and 15 minutes there. Plan some tasks you can do during those blocks of time.

Multitasking seems like it saves time, but it takes your brain time to switch between tasks you’re doing simultaneously. It can also cause you to make mistakes you ordinarily wouldn’t. You’ll make better use of your time by focusing entirely on one thing at a time. Stop multitasking!

You can also manage your time more effectively by just using your phone’s timer. However, if you want to leverage technology, there are time tracker programs that can help. These apps can take over some of the time management tasks for you.

Time management is one of the biggest challenges people face when working remotely. By learning a few fundamental techniques to manage your time better, you’ll see tremendous results in your energy and productivity levels.

Remember, either you can control your time, or your time can control you!
