Over the course of my career, I have been blessed to have several leaders who have invested in my growth and development.
One of my mentors recently retired, however we keep in touch. While I don’t see her every day, I value her advice and counsel.
Not long ago my mentor called me to tell me how much she appreciated my leadership. Of course, it made my day! Why? Because she is a great a leader, whom I admire.
After our conversation, I reflected on our relationship over the years. I first meet this leader when she hired me to oversee a new program. The position was brand new and I was given the opportunity to create and implement the program.
I am a type A personality, who tends to work late. I would spend my days out at field sites and then go to my office when most people would be leaving for day. I enjoyed having the entire floor to myself.
My mentor also normally worked late. At least once a week when I was working late, I would here my mentor call my name. My office was next to hers and she would call out “Kim are you over there?”
I would respond yes ma’am as I stood up and walked over to her office. She would look up and tell me to sit down. She would ask about my day and would listen to my struggles. As I talked she would ask questions to guide the conversation.
Sometimes she would share a situation she was dealing with and ask how I would handle it. However, most of time she would give me additional work. I would walk out of her office shaking my head wondering why I responded when she called my name.
Over the course of the four years I worked for her, my mentor used her influence to increase my influence. I didn’t realize it at the time, but my mentor created an environment for me to expand my skill set and continue to grow as a leader.
