Have you ever heard the expression, “Great leaders inspire greatness in others?” If you answered yes, then you are probably a Stars Wars fan. How do I know?

Because the quote is from Star Wars: The Clone Wars animated series.

My favorite Star Wars character is Master Yoda, Grand Master of the Jedi Order. Why is Master Yoda my favorite character? Master Yoda is the oldest and most powerful Jedi Master. He is also a great warrior. But I like Master Yoda because he is an inspiration to others. His wisdom is recognized and valued throughout the Galactic Republic.

Like most Star Wars characters, Yoda’s race and planet are unknown. While he speaks English, his speech pattern is unique. Master Yoda has appeared in every Star Wars movie; however, we never encounter another member of his species.

If you follow Master Yoda’s journey through the Star Wars saga, you can see his fingerprints on every major character. Master Yoda’s influence extends to every Jedi throughout the Republic. For over 800 years, Master Yoda trained members of the Jedi Order.

Now, I know you are thinking it is only a movie. While you may not be a Star Wars fan, the quote, “Great leaders inspire greatness in others,” still rings true. Although Master Yoda is a fictional character, he is a model of leaders who inspire others to achieve greatness.

How did Master Yoda inspire others? He was a great listener. Master Yoda never gave the answer. He provoked others thinking and challenged their perceptions. Master Yoda earned the trust and respect of all including his enemies. He provided a vision of hope for the rebellion.

Murray Newlands said, “The mark of a true leader is the ability to encourage the employee commitment and engagement that is the foundation for continued success.” To achieve your vision, you will need others by your side.

How will you inspire others to achieve your vision? Newlands offers the following seven habits of inspiring leaders for you to emulate:

  1. Model positivity
  2. Display gratitude
  3. Articulate a future thinking vision
  4. Listen to drive change
  5. Communicate effectively
  6. Build trust
  7. Live your “why”

Inspiring others to go beyond themselves, is critical to a leader’s success. Therefore, a leader must see beyond the obvious in people. As the leader, look for the hidden talents in others and inspire them to go beyond themselves.

“If your actions inspire others to dream more, do more and become more, you are a leader”
– John Quincy Adams
