8 Impediments to Career Success

Have you ever known someone who was very talented, but they never achieved success? As a coach, I have worked with several individuals who found themselves in that exact situation…

Earlier in my career, I worked with an individual who had excellent skills. When we had our first conversation, this individual explained they were struggling in their career. The individual was extremely frustrated.

During our conversation, the individual shared how they had completed several major projects with success. Their annual performance reviews were satisfactory. However, while others had been promoted, the individual had been overlooked.

I asked the individual if they had asked for feedback from their supervisor on how to achieve their goals. They responded yes. The supervisor told the individual the decision makers didn’t know who they were…

The individual explained they were shy and didn’t enjoy self-promotion. As a result, they were content to let their work speak for its self. During the conversation, I realized the individual was an introvert.

Over the next several conversations, we worked on different strategies to increase the individual’s visibility. Recently I reconnected with the individual at a social event. They were excited to tell me how much their career had changed as their profile increased.

Who has the most influence over your career? You! So, the question is, are you helping your career or blocking your success? In her article, “Is This Person Sabotaging Your Career?”, Dawn Graham reminds us we are our best career manager.

Graham also points out that sometimes our actions may be sabotaging our careers. The following are eight specific ways Graham has identified you may be blocking your career success:

  1. Ego – When your ego blocks your ability to learn and grow, you limit your opportunities.
  2. Comparison – Be the best you! Don’t compare yourself to others.
  3. NGE (Not Good Enough) Syndrome – Confidence is a critical component of success.
  4. Impostor Syndrome – Believing you are a fraud and don’t deserve success.
  5. Fear – Fear of failure will prevent you from taking risk.
  6. Distraction – Avoidance of change will leave you behind.
  7. Isolation – Building your network will expand your influence.
  8. Ignorance – Ignorance is not bliss. To achieve your career goals, you must stay abreast of industry advances.

As a leader, you make choices that directly impact your career every day. Your actions can enhance or sabotage your career.

“Your career is your business. It’s time to manage it as a CEO.”
