The last three months have been challenging! But we are beginning to exit the dark tunnel of COVID-19. As States begin to reopen, many of us are asking what life will look like in the aftermath of the pandemic.

As families are sitting down for dinner, they are discussing how the pandemic has changed their world. Kids want to know when they can go to the movies, spend time with their friends, and go to the mall. Parents are asking when will schools reopen, when can they return to church, and should they return to work?

Like families, organizations are also grappling with life after COVID-19. To protect their staff and keep their business going, many companies shifted to working remotely during the pandemic. As the economy begins to reopen, many organizations are asking what does work look like in the post-pandemic world.

Organizations are wondering how to restart themselves while keeping employees safe. Leaders are asking what safety protocols are needed, who needs to return, and how will employees adjust? Without proper planning, organizations will struggle and may not survive.

Therefore, leaders must be strategic and intentional in developing and implementing their reopening plans. So, as a leader, what considerations should you evaluate as you create your plan?

Here are seven questions to ponder as you develop your plan:

  1. What safety protocols and procedures must be implemented to increase safety and minimize risk?
  2. Do you need to bring all employees back onsite or should you maintain some remote work team members?
  3. How can you redesign the facility to accommodate social distancing?
  4. How will you rebuild team morale and trust?
  5. What technology can you leverage to increase productivity?
  6. How will you communicate the “new norms” throughout the organization?
  7. What lessons have you learned, and how will you apply them to enhance your organization’s performance?

Your answers will provide the framework for your reopening plan.

According to the SmithGroup, “Organizations that are able to build in resiliency in their approach to returning to work from this devastating crisis will not only be more successful in the immediate future but will thrive in the long-term.”

Remember, the successful outcome of your plan is dependent upon how much time and effort you put into development. There is no one-size-fits-all plan. Your plan must be unique and tailored to your organization.

“The secret of change is to focus all your energy, not on fighting the old, but building on the new.”
