It seems as if it was only yesterday when the world was in a state of panic about Y2K.
Happy New Year leader! Are you ready for the new decade? I hope your answer is a resounding, yes!
It’s been 20 years since we thought life as we knew it was going to come crashing down when we entered a new millennium. Now 20 years later, we not only survived, but we are thriving. The world didn’t end; however, it has drastically changed.
In 1999, the internet was a novelty, Google was two years old, social media didn’t exist, and we didn’t know what a selfie was. While we had cell phones, smartphones were a gimmick in a James Bond movie. Today technology drives our lives. We can’t imagine a world without smartwatches, on-demand streaming services, and internet shopping.
Yes, technology has increased the speed of change, but how did we make so much progress in such a short time? A growth mindset! The changes we now consider as essential components of our lives started as a dream in someone’s mind.
All leaders have dreams, but we don’t always act on them. Why? Because somewhere in our past, we stop believing in our abilities. Recently, one of our pastors asks us if we were focused on the memories of yesterday or the dreams of tomorrow.
Inventors not only ask why they also ask why not. They are driven to answer those two questions. Now I know you are thinking, I don’t want to invent something, which is okay!
So, what’s the point? The same mindset that drives inventors can help you achieve your dreams. As you determine your goals for this new year and decade, don’t let the memories of yesterday keep you from your dreams of tomorrow.
To achieve your dreams, you must move beyond the memories of yesterday. Pastor Matt Roden said it best when he said, “If the past drives you then your past will define you.” Now is the time to move out of your comfort zone and put your leadership dreams into action.
“The past is a place of reference, not a place of residence; the past is a place of learning, not a place of living”
Roy T. Bennett
As you write your leadership goals for the new year and decade, remember to ask yourself the following questions:
- Where do I want to be in one, five, and ten years?
- Why and why not?
Are you taking steps to achieve your dreams?
