When I assumed a new leadership role in one of my prior organizations, it was an opportunity to build a new program. I was excited and concerned at the same time. Not only was I new to the position, but I was also new to the organization and the industry.

As I began my journey in my new position, I realize I didn’t have a clue how the organization worked. My job required I work with several different departments. I quickly realized that I needed to build a network to help me succeed.

Every week over the next several months, I would take time to meet with an individual in a different department. As we would wrap-up our meeting, I would ask, “who do you know that I need to know?” At the end of my first year, I had established a relationship with someone in every department.

Over the next three years, as my network grew, so did my influence. When I transitioned to my next leadership position, my network was a critical component for success in my new role.

As a coach “Who do you that I need to know” is one of my favorite questions. Why? Because it provides you with the opportunity to expand your network. As a leader, your network will determine your success.

Why are networks a valuable component of your success? According to Brian Uzzi and Shannon Dunlap, “networks deliver three unique advantages: private information, access to diverse skill sets, and power.” Your ability to leverage your network will increase your influence and success.

So how do you build your network? Diane Schumaker-Krieg offers five essential career building tips.

  1. Be great at what you do – learn your craft, and always strive for excellence.
  2. Ask for more responsibility – volunteer to take on the additional task to help the organization. Think outside the box as you add value to others.
  3. Don’t be a wallflower – Prepare and participate in meetings. Ensure you are prepared to add value to the conversation.
  4. Promote the success of others – give credit to others.
  5. Build your support network – reach out and connect with groups within and outside your organization and industry.

As you build your networks, you will increase your influence.

“If you want to go fast, go alone. If you want to go far, go with others.”
