Leaders Build Championship Teams

I have a confession to make. I’m a football fan! Growing up, I was a Chicago Bears and Pittsburgh Steelers fan…

After I retired from the military, I moved to the Tampa Bay area and became a Tampa Bay Buccaneer fan. Yes, I’m a Buccaneers fan! In fact, I was a season ticket holder for many years.

Now I must admit I’m not a rabid fan who paints my face and dresses up in crazy outfits. However, over the years, I have accumulated my fair share of jerseys, visors, and beads.

While I enjoy watching the National Football League, I don’t enjoy watching college football during the season. I check the scores for my favorite teams, but I don’t watch the games.

Although I don’t watch the games during the regular season, I enjoy watching the National Championship game. Why? It reminds me of one of my favorite quotes from Michael Jordan. He said, “Talent wins games, teamwork and intelligence wins championships.”

Teamwork is the key to success. Both teams are comprised of talented players; however, the team that works together to execute their plan wins the game, and the championship.

As a leader, your job is twofold. First, you want to hire the best individuals for your organization. Next is to build a successful team. Your success will depend on the effectiveness of your team.

“Your biggest challenge will be building a great team.”

John Doerr

So, how can you build a successful team? Follow these six steps of championship coaches:

  1. Clearly define roles and responsibilities: Every member of the team has a specific position on the team. The role of the quarterback is different from the middle linebacker, which is different from the kicker.
  2. Value each role: Each member of the team is essential to the success of the organization. While the quarterback receives most of the attention, the kicker is just as important.
  3. Communicate clearly and frequently: Execution of the game requires every member of the team understands the plan.
  4. Establish goals: Coaches not only establish short-term, mid-term, and long-term goals for the team but ensure team members work together to achieve those goals.
  5. Learn from failures: As the team prepares for game day, they study film to learn from their past mistakes.
  6. Celebrate success: Team members are recognized for doing a great job. They are presented with the game ball or a shout out during the post-game meeting.

Building a successful team time takes time and hard work. Remember, “Teamwork makes the dream work!”

Are you building a championship team?
