Several years ago, my doctor gave me a wake-up call. I was sitting in her office waiting for my lab results. Well, when she entered the room, I knew it was not going to be good.
My doctor had been tracking my blood sugar levels, and unfortunately, my A1C was not where it was supposed to be…
Over the next several minutes, my doctor explained I needed to make changes to my diet. In addition to a stack of papers, she gave me a prescription to measure my blood sugar at home.
Now I would love to tell you I went home and followed my doctor’s directions. However, that would not be true. While I heard everything my doctor told me, the impact didn’t register in my brain. As a result, none of the changes I made affected my health.
One of my favorite authors, Craig Groeschel, said, “Your life is always moving in the direction of your strongest thoughts.” In other words, what we focus on is what we will move towards. Why? Because our thoughts drive our actions
As a biology major in college, I spent some time studying the brain. According to David DiSalvo, “The unconscious processing abilities of the human brain are estimated at roughly 11 million pieces of information per second. Compare that to the estimate for conscious processing: about 40 pieces per second.”
Our brains are powerful and always working. While we all know the brain is the control center for the body, most of us don’t understand how the brain operates. Our subconscious never turns off.
After another frustrating doctor’s appointment, I realized my problem was a lack of focus. Once I began to reprogram my thoughts and focus on a lifestyle change instead of diet, I started to see results.
Why? Because most of our battles are won or lost in our minds. Groeschel reminds us how our thoughts move us to achieve what we spend our time thinking about.
When I began to shift my thinking and focus on attaining a healthy lifestyle, I made different choices. I am happy to report during a recent visit to my doctor, my lab results improved significantly.
So how can focus help you, as a leader?
As the leader, your team will follow your example. Defining and focusing on your thoughts will drive your actions.
“You get what you focus on, so focus on what you want.”
