As we prepare to celebrate the beginning of a new decade, I have a critical question for you to answer.
Now I know what you are thinking. Can I have the week to celebrate the New Year before I start writing my goals?
The answer to your question is yes! Yes, you can take the time to celebrate. But before I ask my question, I would like to share an experience I had during a recent vacation.
When my husband and I travel to a location for the first time, we like to take a guided tour. During our latest vacation, we went to the British Virgin Islands. Since it was our first visit to the islands, my husband booked an island tour.
As we boarded the bus with our group, we were greeted by our driver/tour guide. He was an older gentleman who has lived on the island for the last 30 years. The group was excited to explore the island.
Over the next three hours, our excitement turned into a strong desire to end the tour as quickly as possible. After the first hour, individuals on tour were asking if we could go back to our ship. Yes, it was that bad!
My husband and I have taken many tours over the years, some have been awesome, and others have been just okay. But this was by far one of the worst tours we have taken. I found myself praying we would make it back to the ship in one piece.
Although people were complaining loudly, our driver/tour guide was oblivious. It was as if he didn’t have a clue what was going on around him. As the complaints grew louder, he continued the tour as if nothing was wrong.
When we arrived at the port, members of the group jumped off the bus without mumbling a thank you. As we departed the bus, my husband apologized to me profusely for booking the tour.
Of course, we survived, but the experience reminded me of a fundamental question I often ask my clients. As I reflected on the experience, I realized our driver was not operating in his gifting. Our driver was not thriving but surviving.
So, what is the question: Are you operating in your gifting? Why is this a critical question? Because your answer will determine if you are thriving or surviving.
When we are operating in our gifting, then we can fulfill our God-given purpose. God has gifted each us. We were placed on this earth to fulfill our purpose. When we know our purpose, and we walk in our purpose, we will thrive.
My question is the precursor to completing your goals. So, before you start working on your goals for the New Year, answer the question. I hope your answer is yes, but if it’s no, now is the time to make a change.
“The meaning of life is to find your gift. The purpose of life is to give it away.”
Pablo Picasso
Life is to short to spend your time surviving. It’s time to thrive, not just survive.
Are you thriving in your gifting?
