Have you ever asked yourself what-if questions? Of course, you have! We all ask what-if questions. As a young leader, my friends and I would sit around and discuss different what-if scenarios.

During one of my conversations with my mentor, I shared some of my what-if questions. When I finished, my mentor told me to stop worrying about things I could not control. She told me to focus on the big picture.

My mentor encouraged me to put my head down and do a great job every day. As I progressed in my career, I began to appreciate my mentor’s point. Despite the different challenges I faced, my focus was on what I could control.

The statement’s validity really struck home with me when I didn’t get selected for a position. Early in my career, I was offered an opportunity to work at a military academy. Although I wanted to accept the job, I was advised to stay on the operational track if I wanted to get promoted. So, I turned down the position.

Several years later, I wanted to pursue a teaching position at the academy. When I asked about the position, I was informed that I would not get the position. Of course, I wondered why? I was told individuals who had served in a previous capacity at the academy were moved to the top of the list.

So, my decision to turn down the opportunity early in my career directly impacted my future. As I reflected on my early decision, I started asking myself what-if questions. I began second-guessing myself.

I wondered if I’d made the right choice. The words of my mentor rang very loudly in my ears. I could hear her saying, “keep your focus on the big picture.” As I have progressed in my career, I never forgot that lesson.

During times of crisis, our first thought is, how will this affect me. But as the leader, you must keep your focus on what is essential.

“You don’t overcome challenges by making them smaller but by making yourself bigger.”

– Dr. John C. Maxwell

As a leader I have shared my mentor’s advice numerous times, especially during difficult times. During this recent crisis, my mentor’s words once again reminded me to keep my focus on the big picture.
