Wow, 2020 has been quite a year. We have experienced many trials and tribulations. COVID-19 has forced us to make changes in our daily routines as well as our work environments.
As I reflect on 2020, I realize it has been quite a journey as we have struggled to navigate the pandemic. As a result, over the past 4 months, we have focused on how to turn adversity into an advantage as you lead through a crisis.
The series was based on the teaching by John C. Maxwell. Our primary focus was on the following three points:
- Practical ways to maneuver through times of difficulty and adversity
- Effectively battle distractions during times of crisis and stress
- Adopting successful thinking habits to think your way through any crisis
Why is it essential for a leader to be prepared to lead through a crisis? Because every leader will face adversity at some point. Therefore, the question is, how will you respond when a crisis arises.
So how do you, as a leader, rise to the occasion? Consider the following five points to help guide you.
- Define the crisis
- Stay focused and remove distractions
- Adapt to the uncertainty
- Communicate and delegate
- Align decisions with your values
As the leader, you set the tone for your organization. How you respond will determine the success of the organization.
The people you lead want to see and connect with their leader, especially during difficult times. Therefore, Maxwell reminds us, “leaders should do three things: show up early, show up with clarity, and show up with hope.”
Leaders must be visible and communicate with clarity. They also set the direction for the organization. But most importantly, leaders must have faith that together, we can find an answer. Napoleon said, “A leader is a dealer in hope.”
Hope is not living in a fantasy. It is an active virtue. One of my favorite acronyms for hope is:
- H – hope
- O – opportunity
- P – passion
- E – empathy
During difficult times, leaders who believe in their team, look for opportunity, display their passion, and demonstrate their understanding and feelings of others will turn adversity into an advantage.
“Need motivation? Grab hold of hope!”
– John Maxwell
As you prepare to face your next crisis, remember to be a dealer in hope.
