Have you ever had one of those days where you wonder what did you accomplish? You were super busy running from here to there, but at the end of the day, you didn’t get anything done! Well, I’ve had several days just like the one I described.
[callout]This post is the first in a series based on the book Today Matters: 12 daily practices to guarantee success by Dr. John C. Maxwell.[/callout]
Every day before I leave my office I plan my activities for the next day. My calendar is the key to my plan. Why? Because if I don’t manage my time someone else will!
Now, I would love to tell you every day I follow my calendar down to the last detail, but that would not be true. Some days my day gets off track before I walk into the building. There are times when I feel like I’m on a roller coaster!
How do I avoid making the same mistake every day? No, matter how hectic the day has been, I always take time to plan for tomorrow. Why, because the key to your success is found in your daily choices. Wayne Dyer said, “Our lives are the sum total of the choices we have made.”
So what choices are you making day today that will impact your future? I hope your response was all my decisions impact my tomorrow. Yes, all of your options will affect your future. For example, you have a desire to move up the corporate ladder. A small group of your colleagues meet during lunch to discuss different leadership books they are reading; however, you chose to have lunch with negative Nancy, who knows all of the office gossips.
What is the impact of your decision on your future? When the next opportunity for promotion comes along, who do you think your boss will choose? John Wooden once said, “When opportunity comes, it’s too late to prepare.”
So how can you be prepared for opportunity when it knocks? Start by examining the choices you make every day. Steve Bloom offers the following four questions to guide your thinking:
- What are all your everyday decisions adding up to?
- Is this truly an isolated decision or a trend?
- Can you see these decisions as part of the bigger picture?
- What kind of decisions do you make on a regular basis?
The choices we make today will define our future.

So what choices will you make today to prepare for the future?
