When I decided to join the military, several of my friends and family asked me why? It was a difficult time for our country. The Vietnam War had recently ended, and the country was dealing with the aftermath of the war.

Although women have served in the military in various roles throughout history, the role of women in the military was changing in the late 1970’s. As the draft ended in 1978, the Army also decided to end the Women’s Army Corps (WAC) in 1978.

While I never served as a WAC, as a young officer I was fascinated by the rich history of the WAC. I remember speaking with my mentor about her time as a WAC. She shared the history of WAC, which began in 1943 as the Women’s Army Auxiliary Corps. The insignia of the WAC was Pallas Athena, the Greek goddess of wisdom, crafts, and battles.

When I asked her why she joined the Army during a time when the opportunities for women were limited, she explained being a part of the WAC gave her purpose.

According to Elizabeth M. Collins, the WAC provided women with the opportunity to serve as full-fledged soldiers. Because of women who served in the WAC, I had the opportunity to serve my country alongside my male peers.

As a woman of faith, I understand how my mentor felt about her purpose. John Maxwell said, “I sincerely believe that faith holds the key to life’s meaning.”

My faith grounds me and gives me purpose. I am a part something greater than me. Understanding my purpose gives me meaning and direction. It drives my decisions and helps me navigate difficult times.

So why is faith important? Maxwell gives four reasons why faith matters in his book, Today Matters.

  1. Faith gives me a divine perspective
  2. Faith gives me health
  3. Faith gives me strength
  4. Faith gives me resilience

Everyone believes in something; the question is what does he or she believe in?

As a leader, you set the vision and direction for the organization. Helping others find their purpose will help them take on challenges that will stretch and inspire them and also move the organization forward.

What are the benefits of living our lives for a cause that’s bigger than we are?
