Have you ever watched the show Shark Tank? The show gives budding entrepreneurs the opportunity to present their ideas to industry titans, also known as “sharks.” The goal of the entrepreneurs is to convince the sharks to invest their idea.

[callout]This post is part of a series based on the book Today Matters: 12 daily practices to guarantee success by Dr. John C. Maxwell.[/callout]

While I have only watched the show a couple of times, I found it fascinating to watch average people present ideas to solve everyday problems. When questioned by the sharks, the entrepreneurs share their creative process and how their idea took shape over time.

As a leader, you need to generate fresh ideas. However, creative thinking is only one form of thinking. Why is it important to spend time thinking? Because good thinking opens the door to success. John Maxwell said, “The major difference between successful and unsuccessful people is how they think.”

There are many kinds of thinking demonstrated by successful people. In his book Today Matters, Maxwell offers different types of thinking skills of successful people. For example, there is big picture thinking, creative thinking, unselfish thinking, and bottom line thinking.

So, if thinking is the key to success, how much time do spend thinking? Well if you are like most leaders, the answer is not much! Why? Because leaders are extremely busy. However, successful leaders understand great thinking comes from good thinking.

[callout]Leaders must be intentional in creating time to think.[/callout]

Remember, your daily calendar will determine your success. Creating opportunities to clear your mind and think will help you be more productive. Maxwell offers six ways to help you improve your thinking.

  1. Find a place to think
  2. Set aside time to think every day
  3. Find a process that works for you
  4. Capture your thoughts
  5. Put your thoughts into action
  6. Improve your thinking every day

To achieve your vision, it is important to remove the mental clutter and spend time thinking. Dedicate time to think in a way that adds value to yourself and others.

What steps will you take to remove the mental clutter and spend time thinking?

Kim
