Who’s in Charge of Your Career?

For the past several weeks, we have seen modern-day unemployment records. As a result, many of my former colleagues, who’ve lost their jobs, have reached out to me for career advice.

As I’ve reflected on the conversations with them, I asked myself the question, “who’s in charge of my career?”

It is a question we all ask at some point in our lives. Early in my career, I was faced with the challenge of answering that question. Let me explain my situation…

While serving in the military, I wanted to pursue an opportunity to serve at one of the military academies. I believed the position would allow me to grow as a leader and further my career. It was a great opportunity, and I was very excited to pursue it.

I remember going home to share my excitement with my family. After discussing the situation with my family, it was decided I would not pursue the opportunity. As you can imagine, I was very disappointed.

When I met with my mentor to turn down the opportunity, my mentor asked me if I was sure about my decision. I explained my family was not in support of the move. In hopes that I would reconsider, my mentor reminded me again of the benefits of the position.

As I left the meeting, I found myself wondering if I had made the best decision. I wanted to pursue the opportunity, but I needed to honor my family’s desires.

I found myself torn. As a woman of faith, my relationship with God is significant. As I drove home, I prayed for guidance. My hope was God would open the door for me to be selected for the position. However, God chose to close the door.

For some time, I was frustrated, disappointed, and angry. I couldn’t understand why God closed the door. During my morning devotion, the question “who is in charge of my career” was at the top of my thoughts.

I learned a critical lesson that day. God is in charge of my career. As His child, God cares about me and wants me to be successful. He always has my best interest at heart.

Once I accepted God’s wisdom and direction, I was at peace with the closed door. Throughout my career, God has opened doors to promote me. He has also closed many doors to protect me. But, trusting God is not always easy.

“It’s one thing to believe in God; it’s quite something else to trust him with our lives.”

Rick Perry

Over the years, I have experienced the joy of promotions and the disappointment of rejection, but no matter what happens, I know who is in charge of my career.
