Have you ever set a huge audacious goal? What happened when you achieved it? What did you do next?
As the leader of my organization, I understand my team looks to me set the direction of our organization. In addition to casting the vision for the organization, I am responsible for celebrating our success.
Recently, our organization accomplished a huge goal. We set a goal that many individuals didn’t believe we could accomplish. So, what was our goal? To earn a “B” school grade for the second time in the school’s history.

We are an urban school, which serves a large population of “At Promise” students. Many of our students come to our school not performing at grade level. We must prepare students to meet the state requirements to graduate.
Our road to success had several potholes. We experienced personnel turnover, financial constraints, emotional trauma, and shifting mandates but we accomplished our goal. Our journey also included the joy of celebrating our students’ triumph over adversity, the hard work of our faculty and staff, and the privilege of changing our student’s lives.
Now in the spirit of transparency, celebrating is not my strong suit. As I complete a task, I am ready to move on to the next thing. However, I have learned its important to celebrate the big and small wins.
So why do leaders need to celebrate success? Sonya Shelton offers three significant reasons why leaders should celebrate:
- Acknowledges and honors the work that has been done
- Shows appreciation for the individuals who did the work
- Reinforces motivation to continue the journey
As the leader it very important to celebrate success. If celebrating is not your strength, then develop an action plan using the following questions, developed by Shelton, as your guide:
- What accomplishments can you celebrate?
- What have others accomplished that you can celebrate?
- How will you celebrate?

As you move towards success, remember to take time to honor success and celebrate the victory.
How will you celebrate success?
